Fine.
Sehr schönes Exemplar.
An anti-fascist parable with homoerotic undertones, in which a seedy illusionist attempts to bend and manipulate his audience's will by means of his hypnotic powers. Based on actual events in the fictional Italian resort of Torre di Venere, a stand-in for Forte dei Marmi on the Tuscan Riviera, where the Mann family vacationed in August/ September 1926.
Filmed in 1994 by Klaus Maria Brandauer, who also played the role of hypnotist Cipolla, alongside Julian Sands as Professor Fuhrmann and Pavel Greco as Mario. The film won the Special Silver St. George for cinematographer Lajos Koltai at the 1995 Moscow International Film Festival. Winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature.
