Boyd's second collection of stories, appearing some fourteen years after his first, On the Yankee Station. Four of these were previously published in Granta Magazine. Their range of reference is sweeping and varied, from Ludwig Wittgenstein to David Hockney, burgeoning fascism to burgeoning capitalism, foreign languages to Hollywood-speak, an imaginary Brazil to cinéma vérité.
The short story "Hôtel des Voyageurs", featuring the character Logan Mountstuart, was subsequently expanded into the 2002 novel Any Human Heart, in which his life intersects with key 20th century events and personnages.
