Author's third novel. Winner of the 2002 CWA Ellis Peters Historical Dagger. Shortlisted for the 2002 Man Booker Prize and the Orange Prize for Fiction. Historical novel about a young orphan girl growing up in a den of thieves in 1860's London, who is forced to act as the linchpin in the seduction and dispossession of an heiress. A two-part BBC TV adaptation, directed by Aisling Walsh, and starring Sally Hawkins, Imelda Staunton, and Rupert Evans was broadcast in 2005. A big screen adaptation set in 1930's colonial Korea, had its premiere at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival under the helmsmanship of director Park Chan-wook.
