Preceding the Australian issue printed with green boards at the Griffin Press in Adelaide.

Author's last novel, recounting the eccentric, often fantastical recollections of a late leading lady, purportedly written in the first person and "edited" by White himself, a frequent target of her scorn. Awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973 "for an epic and psychological narrative art which has introduced a new continent into literature", according to the Swedish Academy's citation.
