Four autobiographical fragments chronicling the author's time spent managing a coffee plantation in Kenya – a companion piece to her much-acclaimed Out of Africa. The two books formed the basis for the 1985 Sydney Pollack film titled Out of Africa, starring Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, and Klaus Maria Brandauer. Amongst the four reminiscences collected here, 'Barua a Soldani' (Letter from a King) first appeared in the 1950s in Esquire magazine, while the last, 'Echoes from the Hills', was written as a coda to this volume in the summer of 1960. "A writer with a powerful imagination and a shrewd intelligence." –The New York Times Book Review
