Smaller Slang Dictionary

First edition of Eric Partridge's Smaller Slang Dictionary

Eric PartridgeEric Honeywood Partridge, 1894–1979
First edition. Sm. 8vo. Pp. [ix], [1], 204. Green cloth, lettered in gilt to spine, in a b/w printed dust jacket.
Light foxing to top edge, former owner's name and address to front endpaper, closed tear to dustwrapper rear panel, which sustains some soiling, else Fine.
This truncated version, abridged to about one-twelfth of the size of the original, was published for the general public and deals mainly, although not exclusively, with the slang of the 20th century. "This excellent small book is an abbreviation of Mr Partridge's well-known Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English. It omits all material obsolete by 1900, nearly all words confined to the underworld, and everything that could bring a blush to the cheek. There is plenty left, and very entertaining it is."
