Widely praised translation of the foremost Greek poet of the twentieth century. W.H. Auden took issue in the letter pages of the New York Times in 1973, when Lawrence Durrell in reviewing the newly-published renderings of Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard failed to mention Rae Dalven's "highly-praised" earlier translation. Since 1997, the Rae Dalven Prize has been awarded annually by the A.S. Onassis Program in Hellenic Studies at New York University, where she was a professor of Modern Greek literature. "Rae Dalven's translation gives the English-speaking world a new poet." –Lionel Trilling
