Ralph Hodgson; John S. Mayfield
First edition. 12mo. [4]pp. Folded white cardstock. First printing thus, with a facsimile of a prose note by Hodgson. In a further "Note", John S. Mayfield states that in a letter Ralph Hodgson made "a little statement" about Algernon Charles Swinburne, he thought merited wider circulation. Hence this ephemeral presentation.
A widely anthologized Georgian poet of a 'pastoral' bent, Hodgson was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1954. A prolific collector of manuscripts, first editions and rare materials, with a particular focus on the English poet Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837–1909), Mayfield held high-ranking positions in the U.S. government and in industry, most notably as a vice president of the American Rail and Steel Company. His Swinburne collection was presented to the Syracuse University in 1964.
