Scott Fitzgerald both as a major novelist and as chief chronicler of the Jazz Age. Yet, until now, there has been no definitive edition of the novel exactly as it was written by Fitzgerald. From its first printing onwards, the text has been subject to rigorous house-styling that has distorted the characteristic rhythms and structure of the author's sentences.

This critical edition draws on the manuscript and surviving proofs of the novel, together with Fitzgerald's subsequent revisions to key passages, to provide the first authoritative text of this seminal work.
