James Dickey was Consultant in Poetry at the de facto national library from 1966–1968, succeeding Stephen Spender, a position now replaced by that of "Poet Laureate". His 1970 novel Deliverance was turned into a highly successful film by John Boorman, in which Dickey played the role of sheriff.
