Lawrence Durrell1912–1990

First edition. 8vo. Pp. 316, [1]. Publisher's rose linen cloth boards, titled in gilt to spine. Cream dust jacket printed in black and red [priced 25s net to front flap]. Author's note.
With the scarce yellow "Book Society Choice" wraparound band.
Listed in Neil Barron's "Core SF Collection". The first volume in a "double-decker" sequence later collected as "The Revolt of Aphrodite", with vague echoes of the Quartet, according to Durrell. A scientific genius marries into a shadowy and enigmatic firm and given unlimited funds to complete his work on a super-computer. A dystopic novel set in London and the Mediterranean – the author's first since the completion of the Alexandria Quartet in 1960.
