The scarce casebound edition published a year before the paperback version and preceding the U.S. edition by the Overlook Press by some five years. Originally published in Afrikaans by Queillerie Publishers (Pty) Ltd, Pretoria, in 1994.
Winner of the 1995 Noma Award for the best book published in Africa in any language or genre. Named by the Mail and Guardian as the best Afrikaans novel of the decade.
