The tale of Lyra Belacqua, whose self-appointed task is to arrest the collapse of the fabric of the universe. An inverted retelling of John Milton's epic Paradise Lost, with Pullman commending humanity for what Milton saw as its most tragic failing, original sin.

A film adaptation of the first book in the series under its American title The Golden Compass was released in 2007.
