One Man's Bible

First edition in English of Xingjian Gao's One Man's Bible

Xingjian Gao; translated by Mabel Lee
First edition in English. Paperback Original. 8vo. Pp. [vi], 450. Pictorial wraps. Review Copy.
Translated from the Chinese by Mabel Lee, Associate Professor of Chinese Studies at Sydney University. In 2001 she was awarded the New South Wales Premier's Prize for Translation and the PEN Medallion. Gao Xingjian was the first Chinese recipient of the Novel Prize in Literature in 2000 "for an oeuvre of universal validity, bitter insights and linguistic ingenuity".
Author's second novel to be published in English, following Soul Mountain (2001). A fictionalized account of Gao Xingjian's life under the Cultural Revolution (1966–76), where a single sentence spoken years earlier could brand one an enemy of the state. "Brilliant and poetic, keen and original... It burns with a powerfully individualistic fire of intelligence and depth of feeling... Unforgettable." The New York Times
