Fol., viii, 580, iii, [581]-854, [2] pp. Publisher's dark brown buckram over bevelled boards, blocked in red to upper cover and spine, and with a map of "The Black Belt of America" stamped in red to rear cover; endpapers (double at front, single at back); top edge stained brown. With numerous half-tone illustrations, some full-page, plus tipped in fold-out colour map ("Ethnographical Map of Negro Africa") printed in red. 1/1,000 copies printed, many of which were destroyed in a warehouse fire during the Blitz. Published February 1934 at 42s.
Misaligned prelims. with first leaf of Contents (p. v-vi) preceding Foreword (iii-iv), and pp. i-viii, [1]-16 internally professionally re-enforced. Library stamps (Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green) throughout, remnant of removed label to f.f.e.p., vertical creases to title page and fold-out map, a few marginal closed tears and soil marks to textblock, light discolouration to topstain, a touch of dust-soil to boards, slight rubbing and scuffing to tail of gently toned spine, corners a little bumped, else Very Good.
Includes "The Negress in the Brothel" by René Crevel, translated from the French by Samuel Beckett.
