Author's fourth collection of short stories, some of which were previously published in journals such as The New Yorker, Granta, Esquire, and Encounter. The title story itself, "Heavy Water," in which a working-class woman takes her mentally handicapped son on a Mediterranean cruise, was first printed in The New Statesman in 1978, and is re-published here in significantly revised form. "Amis applies his comic timing, his perfect pitch and his curatorial eye to some of the burning issues of our time." –The New York Times Book Review
