Potter's secular retelling of the story of Christ, from his struggle with his own divinity in the wilderness, up to his crucifixion on Golgotha and focusing on the psychological underpinnings of the characters. First broadcast on BBC-1 on 16 April 1969, in The Wednesday Play slot, it was directed by Gareth Davies and starred Irish actor Colin Blakely. The treatment of the subject matter led to Potter being accused of blasphemy by Christian morality campaigner Mary Whitehouse. Six months after its television premiere it was adapted for the stage and played at the Roundhouse, London, with Frank Finlay in the leading role.
"[I]t says more about the essence of Christianity than sermons preached from a dozen pulpits." –Daily Express
