Gleizer, Buenos Aires, in 1928, Borges's lecture was delivered at the Instituto Popular de Conferencias de Buenos Aires the year previously; while this is the first publication of Clemente's essay.

Here Borges, under his mantle as a theorist and a polemicist, extolls his compatriots to reject both the purist Castilian of the Spanish academicians and arrabalero – or common Porteño speech, infected with underworld lunfardo slang and Italianisms – and forge instead a language commensurate with their sensibilities and place in the world.
