Five short stories exploring the psychic wounds wrought by decades of conflict. The autobiographical piece, "The Coral Reef," first appeared in Granta: Fifty (Summer 1995). A slightly different version of the translation of the story "Gunboat on the Yangtze" appeared in the anthology Night, Again: Contemporary Fiction from Vietnam, edited by Linh Dinh (New York: Seven Stories Press, 1996).
