Habeas Corpus – A Play in Two Acts.

Signed first edition of Alan Bennett's Habeas Corpus – A Play in Two Acts.

Alan Bennett

First edition. 8vo. Pp. 75, [5 (blank)]. Cream wraps in integral, illustrated French flaps (there was also a much scarcer, simultaneous hardbound issue). Jacket photograph of Alec Guinness and Madeline Smith from the original London production, by Donald Cooper.
Directed by Ronald Eyre, with music by Carl Davis, it further starred Phyllida Law, Patricia Hayes, and Andrew Sachs. A satirical merry-go-round of mistaken identities and sexual encounters, Bennett's two-act play was first performed at the Lyric Theatre on 10 May 1973, and ran – with cast changes – until 10 August 1974.
Signed by Author to title page. Former ownership inscription to f.f.e.p., else a Very Good, clean copy in firm binding, with some wear and rubbing to cover edges.
"[A] gorgeously vulgar but densely plotted farce that is a downright celebration of sex and the human body... a combination of hurtling action with verbal brilliance." Guardian
