First edition. 8vo. vii., [verso blank] + 342 pp. Publisher's dark blue cloth, titled in gilt. Twelve illustrations including frontispiece by Claude Shepperson. First impression, second state with white end papers. (First issue same but black end-papers, third issue light blue binding with black lettering). The U.S. Bowen-Merrill edition preceded the U.K. edition by almost a month. The two editions sport minor textual differences.
Head and tail of spine rubbed and slightly worn, subscription library imprint blind-stamped to front free end-paper and half-title page, top edge somewhat dusted, fore-edge spotted, light foxing to title page, with moderate offsetting on front free end-paper and recto of final blank, else a near fine copy with tight, uncracked inner hinges.
